Design Warehouse began life in Sydney in 1973. Way ahead of their time, the owners imported furniture from Italy the likes of which no one had ever seen.
Timeless lounge chairs from Le Corbusier, Eames and Arne Jacobsen; sofas by Cassina, Zanotta and Philippe Starck were juxtaposed with tables by Carson and Noguchi.
Over the years, the competition grew. And it became clear that, while Design Warehouse may have been the first to introduce such high quality furniture to Australia, they certainly wouldn’t be the last. It was also becoming clear that their clients were no longer prepared to pay enormous prices for these designer originals.
It was time for change.
It took a year visiting manufacturers in Europe and Asia to finally find some who could faithfully reproduce, in every detail, the furniture Design Warehouse customers had grown to know and love. These replicas have been welcomed to the Design Warehouse collections and now sit alongside the Italian originals.
A fond farewell was bid to the expensive showroom in Darlinghurst and a new, spacious home was found in a warehouse in Zetland.
“The way we see it”, the owners say, “we are really living up to our name: Design Warehouse. Now we are in a position to pass on the huge savings to our many customers, and what’s more, make sure there is somewhere to park.”
Designer furniture at warehouse prices - that’s the slogan Design Warehouse intends to live up to.
